Nina Hale: Injecting personality into a new build

12 July 2018

Nina Hale is an artist, interiors lover and mum of two.

When we moved into our shiny new house, the white walls throughout provided a brilliant canvas for me to imagine and dream up endless decorating schemes. Ideas would keep me up and awake into the small hours and in that first year of letting the house 'dry out', I accumulated a small library of home magazines, changing my mind about colours with every issue.

For our lounge, I had found this fabulous brass, industrial-meets-art deco mirror to go above the fireplace, but when I hung it on our white wall it looked completely lost in space. So that was the defining factor that I needed, and we decided to make the jump to the dark side.

I decided on a dark blue feature wall that would incorporate the fireplace and the alcoves either side. I knew we wanted a blue that was warm and inviting, cosy with the curtains drawn and not at all sterile. I was after a blue that would offset the brass mirror perfectly and provide a beautiful backdrop for my collection of treasures on our open backed shelves.

Thankfully when I was given the colour chart by Painthouse, the decision process became that much easier as the colours are grouped into schemed capsules - so rather than wading through 27 different shades of blue, I could quickly see the tones that I was after. Anders jumped out at me and so off I went.

A big plus - that I didn't fully appreciate when I chose the paint - is that it dries so quickly! I managed to paint the wall, and have it dry before the small people inevitably put their fingers on it to test whether it was wet. It equally doesn't have a smell. This meant we could put the furniture back and sit in a dry, smell free lounge that very evening.

I love my Anders wall. I love the blue against my mirror and my accessories on my shelving unit. The blue is a very inky blue and almost has a warm violet tint in the evening.

The room now looks like what I refer to as 'comfy industrial'. Our well-loved (read battered) brown leather sofa still looks in keeping with the scheme and the husband has sighed with relief that I'm not dragging him round any sofa shops any time soon.
