5 ways to incorporate colour into your home decor

26 June 2020

Looking for new ways to liven up your home decor? With the right colour scheme, you can instantly transform your home into a brighter, more positive space. Colour has a huge effect on the mind and well-being; during these uncertain times, it’s more important than ever to use colour to create supportive, healthy homes. So, out with the beige and in with a splash of inspiring colour! These 5 simple tips will help to inject personality and character into your home decor, all you need is a tin of Painthouse paint and a paintbrush.

Paint a feature wall

Transform an all white room into a space beaming with personality with a striking feature wall. If you find the idea of painting all four walls in a really bright shade rather daunting, feature walls are a great way for you to get a feeling for colour - if you really love the look, it’s easy to roll the colour around the rest of the room!

Surround yourself in the calming effect of deep forest greens like Sienna, Sophie or Cole or the deep enveloping tones of soothing blues like Aksel or Anders for a restful bedroom space. Go bold in hallways and kitchens with shades like fiery Reggie, playful Leif or rich Jenson for a warm and welcoming feel.

Create a wallpaper effect with paint

Wallpapering can be hard and messy work! Take the stress out of decorating and get creative with colour to create a faux wallpaper style with painted lines, squiggles and funky patterns like @hellobakergirl’s fabulous terrazzo effect. It’s also much easier to cover than traditional wallpaper when you next decorate.

Opt for a perfect pastel colour combination like Liv, Piper and Isaac in bedrooms and nurseries to create a relaxing haven. Energise and uplift children’s playrooms with a colourful and playful palette; shades like Darcey, Erin and Reggie will bounce positivity around the room.

Revamp unloved furniture

Bring old and unloved wooden furniture to life again with a fresh lick of paint in really bright shades of yellow, orange and green. Our vibrant shades like purple-pink Ariana, minty green Boone or terracotta Lisbet bring a modern look to outdated furniture.

Add surprise pops of colour to insides of shelves, cupboards and drawers with the bright tones of slightly mustard Nikolena or bold and rich Olando. Learn how to get the best finish for your painted furniture here (link to Bernay’s furniture blog post).

Paint woodwork

Add instant visual interest to hallways and landings by upgrading traditional white doors and skirting boards with vibrant colour. Opt for inspiring paint colours like pastel Liv, lavender Penelope or hot pink Taylor. Painthouse paint is suitable for use on walls, ceilings and woodwork, so only 1 type of paint is needed for your decorating projects!

Give features a fresh lick of paint

Turn traditional features into dazzling focal points with bright and bold colours such as sunny Avery, turquoise Nora or coral-orange Dylan. Add pops of colour by painting dado rails, ceiling roses, cornice and even fireplaces for a contemporary look. A quick coat of our best-selling mauve, Grace will add an instant fresh and modern feel to character properties!
